Fall Activities for Preschool

Seasonal celebrations aren’t just about costumes or treats, they’re also a wonderful opportunity to turn curiosity into learning. At Trinity Spiral School, we believe that every season brings new ways to explore, question, and discover. And what better way to do that than through hands-on science that feels magical and exciting for young children?

Here are some fun, age-appropriate seasonal STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) that help preschoolers build confidence, creativity, and critical thinking, all while having a great time experimenting and exploring.

Bubbling Pumpkin Reaction (Science)

Fill a small pumpkin with baking soda and food coloring, then let children pour vinegar inside. Watch the excitement as it bubbles and fizzes in a fun autumn-themed reaction.

Learning outcome: observing chemical reactions, predicting results, and using descriptive language (“It’s fizzing!” “It smells sour!”).

Floating Balloon Experiment (Math + Science)

Use white balloons and draw simple smiley faces or fall-themed designs. Fill each balloon with a different amount of air. Ask: Which balloon is the biggest? Which is the smallest? Can we count how many puffs it takes to fill one?

Learning outcome: comparing sizes, understanding measurement, and developing number sense.

Build a Spider Web (Engineering)

Use yarn, tape, and paper plates to create spider webs on a classroom wall or table. Challenge children to “rescue” small toy bugs using tweezers or tongs.

Learning outcome: fine motor skills, problem solving, and hand-eye coordination.

Candy Sorting Challenge (Math)

After a class Halloween party, give each child a small mix of candy or colorful objects. Invite them to sort by shape, color, or size—and count how many are in each group.

Learning outcome: early classification, pattern recognition, and graphing.

Dancing Leaves (Science + Movement)

Cut small leaf shapes from tissue paper and place them over a balloon rubbed with static electricity. Watch how the leaves gently lift, “dance,” and float as the charge pulls them upward.

Learning outcome: exploring static charge and energy through playful, hands-on experimentation.

Fall STEM activities for preschoolers isn’t about memorizing facts, it’s about sparking curiosity. The fall season gives us the perfect opportunity to mix science with imagination, math with movement, and learning with laughter.

To celebrate the fall season, consider these festive words and themes that inspire creativity and learning:

Harvest: Reflects the gathering of crops and abundance.

Pumpkin: A symbol of autumn, often used in decorations and recipes.

Crisp: Describes the refreshing coolness of fall air.

Leaves: The changing colors of foliage signify the season.

Bonfire: A popular gathering activity during chilly evenings.

Cider: A traditional fall beverage made from apples.

Acorns: Represents the bounty of nature and wildlife preparation for winter.

Scarecrow: A classic decoration for farms and gardens in autumn.

Hayride: A fun outdoor activity enjoyed during harvest time.

Thanksgiving: A holiday that embodies gratitude and family gatherings.

At Trinity Spiral School, we nurture wonder every day, from the sensory table to the science lab corner. Because when learning feels like magic, children don’t just remember it, they live it.
